
How to Train for Instrument Currency With Purpose

A gray morning over the Pacific Northwest is a poor time to discover that your instrument skills are technically current but operationally rusty. Knowing how to train for instrument currency means more than completing six approaches before a deadline. It means building a repeatable practice rhythm that keeps your scan, automation management, radio work, and decision-making ready for the kind of IFR flying you actually plan to do.
For pilots flying out of Olympia and across Washington and Oregon, that matters. Marine layers, mountain obscuration, busy terminal airspace, and quickly changing weather can turn an ordinary cross-country into a flight that demands disciplined instrument skills. The goal is not just to satisfy a regulation. It is to arrive at the runway feeling ahead of the airplane.
Start With the Instrument Currency Rule
Under 14 CFR 61.57(c), an instrument-rated pilot must have performed and logged at least six instrument approaches, holding procedures, and intercepting and tracking courses through the use of navigation systems within the preceding six calendar months to act as pilot in command under IFR or in weather conditions below VFR minimums.
The phrase “calendar months” deserves attention. It is not a rolling 180-day clock. If your last qualifying instrument work was in May, review the six calendar months immediately preceding the month you intend to fly IFR. A quick review of your logbook before each planned IFR trip prevents an unpleasant surprise when weather is moving in and the airplane is ready to go.
If you fall out of currency, there is a second six-calendar-month period in which you can regain it by completing the required tasks in simulated instrument conditions with a qualified safety pilot or instructor, or in appropriate approved training devices. Once that additional period has passed, you need an instrument proficiency check with an authorized instructor before acting as PIC under IFR again.
That is the legal framework. It should not be your entire training standard. Six rushed approaches in one afternoon may restore currency, but it may not restore the judgment and pace required for a real instrument flight.
How to Train for Instrument Currency in a Realistic Rhythm
The most effective approach is to treat instrument practice as a recurring flight discipline, not a semiannual logbook project. A monthly or every-other-month session reduces workload, creates better retention, and lets you address weaknesses before they become habits.
A useful target is two approaches during each practice flight, with one or more holding and tracking tasks built naturally into the route. Over three flights, you have completed the regulatory tasks while giving yourself time to vary airports, approach types, and weather scenarios.
Build each session around a mission
Rather than departing simply to collect approaches, create a reason for the flight. Plan a short IFR cross-country, a regional business-trip scenario, or a weather diversion exercise. File or simulate a route that requires a departure procedure, enroute navigation, an arrival, and at least one approach to a full stop or missed approach.
For example, a practice flight from Olympia can begin with an instrument departure and a hand-flown segment under the hood. From there, use vectors or a published arrival into a nearby airport, fly an ILS or LPV approach, execute the missed approach, hold as published, then proceed to a second airport for a different type of approach. The exact route matters less than the sequence: briefing, setup, flying, changing plans, and managing the workload.
This approach reveals more than whether you can keep the needles centered. It shows whether you can find the right chart, identify the missed-approach altitude, configure the avionics without losing situational awareness, and communicate clearly while the airplane is doing something other than expected.
Rotate the skills that tend to fade
Flying the same familiar GPS approach repeatedly is comfortable, but it can hide skill gaps. Rotate between precision and nonprecision procedures where available, different runway environments, vectors and full procedure entries, and approaches that require a meaningful missed approach.
Make a point of practicing holds from several entry angles. A hold is not just a box to check for currency. It tests timing, wind correction, situational awareness, and your ability to organize the cockpit while ATC may be issuing changes. Practice intercepting and tracking with both GPS and ground-based navigation when your aircraft and local facilities support it.
Do not force a maneuver simply because it is on a checklist. If a procedure is unavailable, a NOTAM affects it, or weather makes the training choice unwise, adapt the plan. Good instrument pilots do not confuse a training objective with a reason to accept unnecessary risk.
Use a safety pilot or CFII strategically
A qualified safety pilot makes simulated instrument practice possible in the aircraft, but a CFII adds coaching, structure, and an outside perspective on your habits. The better choice depends on your experience and the goal of the session.
Use a safety pilot when you are practicing established procedures and want efficient repetition. Before departure, agree on who is acting as PIC, how you will handle radio calls, the simulated-weather boundaries, and how you will document the flight. The safety pilot must meet the applicable certificate, category and class, medical, and visibility requirements, so confirm the details before you fly.
Schedule time with a CFII when you have been away from IFR flying, are transitioning to new avionics, have trouble staying ahead of the automation, or want to pressure-test your decision-making. A good instructor can turn a routine currency flight into a targeted proficiency session by introducing reroutes, missed approaches, partial-panel work, or a realistic diversion.
Train for the Glass Cockpit You Will Actually Fly
Modern avionics can reduce workload, but only when the pilot understands what the system is doing and what it will do next. In a Garmin-equipped aircraft, instrument proficiency includes purposeful use of the flight plan page, approach loading, altitude constraints, autopilot modes, moving map, weather information, and failure annunciations.
The trap is becoming a button-pusher who can make the magenta line appear but cannot explain the active mode or recover when the system does something unexpected. During practice, verbalize the automation state: what is armed, what is active, what altitude is selected, and what will happen at the next fix. That habit catches errors early.
A standardized fleet has real value here. Consistent DA40 cockpit layouts and avionics reduce the time spent reacquainting yourself with switches, displays, and flows. That does not replace a thorough preflight briefing, especially after a software update, maintenance event, or extended break from the airplane. It simply lets more of your training time go toward flying rather than relearning the platform.
Practice the Parts of IFR That Do Not Count Toward the Minimums
The six approaches, hold, and tracking requirement is a floor. Many of the skills that determine whether an IFR flight feels controlled happen before the final approach course comes alive.
Practice checking weather trends rather than only reading a single report. Brief alternates with realistic fuel margins. Review obstacle and terrain considerations, particularly when planning routes around the Cascades. Rehearse how you will respond to a low-voltage indication, a display failure, a blocked route, or an approach that suddenly goes out of service.
It also pays to practice the human side of instrument flying. Ask for a delay vector when you need one. Tell ATC when you cannot accept a clearance as issued. Slow down, use the autopilot appropriately, and protect the basics of aviate, navigate, and communicate. Professional IFR flying is not about handling every surprise without help. It is about recognizing when workload is rising and using every available resource before it becomes a problem.
Log It Clearly and Debrief It Honestly
Log enough detail that a future review is easy. Record the date, aircraft or device, actual or simulated instrument conditions, approaches performed, holding work, and navigation tasks. For simulated instrument flight in an aircraft, document the safety pilot as required. If you use a training device, make sure it is approved for the credit you intend to claim and that the entry reflects what was actually completed.
Then spend five minutes on a debrief. Which approach felt rushed? Did you miss a frequency change, select an incorrect autopilot mode, or lose track of the missed-approach procedure? One specific lesson from each session is more valuable than pretending every flight was perfect.
Pilots returning after a long break should resist the urge to rebuild proficiency alone. Start with an instructor, keep the first sessions focused, and increase complexity as your scan and workload management return. A formal instrument proficiency check may be required in some cases, but it can also be a smart confidence-building decision before it becomes mandatory.
The best instrument currency plan is one you will actually keep. Put the next session on the calendar before the current one fades from memory, choose scenarios that resemble your real flying, and leave each practice flight with one skill sharper than when you arrived. When the forecast turns gray, that preparation gives you something more useful than a current logbook: calm, capable options.
