What Does a Flight Review Include? A Pilot’s Guide

A flight review is not supposed to feel like a pass-or-fail checkride. It is a structured opportunity to sharpen judgment, refresh skills, and make sure the way you fly still matches the kind of flying you plan to do. So, what does a flight review include? At its FAA minimum, it includes at least one hour of ground training and one hour of flight training with an authorized instructor. In practice, a worthwhile review is tailored to your experience, aircraft, avionics, and mission.

For many pilots, the real value is not checking off a regulatory requirement. It is stepping back into the cockpit with an instructor who can identify rusty habits before they become operational problems. That may mean rebuilding comfort in the traffic pattern, working through a GPS approach setup, or making better weather and fuel decisions for a Pacific Northwest cross-country.

What Does a Flight Review Include Under FAA Rules?

Under FAR 61.56, a flight review requires a minimum of one hour of ground training and one hour of flight training from an authorized instructor. The instructor must provide training that is appropriate to the pilot certificate held, then endorse the pilot’s logbook after finding that the pilot has demonstrated the safe exercise of the privileges of that certificate.

The word “minimum” matters. A pilot who flies regularly in the same airplane may complete a focused review efficiently. A pilot returning after several years away, transitioning to a glass-cockpit airplane, or preparing for more demanding personal travel may benefit from more time. There is no advantage in rushing a review that reveals a genuine training need.

A flight review is generally required every 24 calendar months. It is separate from currency requirements. For example, completing a flight review does not automatically make a pilot current to carry passengers if takeoff-and-landing currency has lapsed. It also does not replace instrument currency or an instrument proficiency check when those are needed.

Certain FAA activities may satisfy the flight review requirement, such as a practical test for a certificate, rating, or operating privilege. Still, many active pilots choose a dedicated review because it allows time to focus on real operating habits rather than the narrow demands of a test.

The Ground Portion: Knowledge That Supports Good Decisions

The ground portion should be more than a quick recitation of regulations. A capable instructor will use it to understand where you fly, what you fly, and where your confidence may have drifted from your current proficiency.

Expect a discussion of regulations relevant to private pilot operations, including airspace, recent experience requirements, required documents, aircraft inspections, weather minimums, fuel planning, and pilot responsibilities. The exact emphasis should reflect your certificate level and flying plans. A VFR pilot who mostly makes local flights has different needs than a pilot using a rental airplane for trips between Olympia, Portland, and eastern Washington.

Weather deserves particular attention in this region. Marine layers, changing ceilings, mountain obscuration, wind, and rapidly moving systems can turn a simple trip into a decision-making exercise. A useful review may include interpreting a real briefing, identifying personal weather limits, and discussing when a delay, diversion, or cancellation is the professional choice.

Aircraft Systems and Performance

A flight review should also revisit the aircraft you will actually fly. In a modern aircraft such as a Diamond DA40, that means more than remembering speeds and checklist flows. It means understanding how the electrical system, engine monitoring, autopilot, GPS navigator, and display systems support safe decision-making.

Glass cockpits provide excellent information, but they also demand discipline. You should be comfortable finding essential information quickly, recognizing abnormal indications, and avoiding heads-down fixation. The review is a good time to practice configuring avionics before workload rises, setting sensible alerts, and knowing what to do when automation does not behave as expected.

Risk Management and Scenario Planning

The strongest ground discussions are scenario-based. Rather than asking only, “What are the VFR weather minimums?” an instructor may ask how you would handle an unexpected lowering ceiling with passengers waiting at your destination, or a fuel stop that becomes unavailable after departure.

Those conversations reveal more than rote knowledge. They show how you manage pressure, assess alternatives, and establish decision points before the airplane is moving. A review may cover personal minimums, the PAVE risk framework, flight planning, runway performance, weight and balance, and practical go/no-go decisions.

The Flight Portion: Rebuilding Precision in the Air

The flight portion usually begins with a thorough preflight and cockpit setup. That is intentional. Many errors begin before engine start: missed fuel checks, rushed weather review, poor weight-and-balance assumptions, or an incomplete avionics setup. An instructor will watch how you organize the flight, not just how well you hold altitude.

Once airborne, the maneuvers and scenarios should fit your certificate privileges and current proficiency. For a private pilot, that often includes normal, short-field, and soft-field takeoffs and landings; slow flight; stalls; steep turns; ground reference maneuvers; emergency procedures; and basic navigation. The instructor may also introduce simulated system failures or an engine-out scenario to evaluate how you prioritize aircraft control, checklist use, communication, and landing options.

A pilot who has not flown recently may need a measured pace. There is no reason to stack difficult maneuvers, unfamiliar avionics, gusty winds, and a busy traffic pattern into the first few minutes of a return flight. A better approach is to establish solid aircraft control, then add complexity as confidence returns.

Landings Are Only Part of the Picture

Pilots often arrive expecting the review to center on landings. They matter, particularly at an active airport where spacing, radio work, wind correction, and stabilized approaches all count. But good landings alone do not prove readiness for safe command decisions.

An instructor is also evaluating how you scan for traffic, manage energy, use checklists, communicate with air traffic control, recover from an unstable approach, and decide when to go around. A go-around is not a failure. It is often evidence that a pilot is managing the flight rather than trying to salvage a landing.

Automation, Navigation, and Avionics

For pilots flying a Garmin-equipped aircraft, a modern flight review should include realistic avionics use. That can involve entering and modifying a flight plan, selecting the correct frequency, interpreting moving-map information, using traffic and terrain tools appropriately, and managing autopilot modes.

The goal is not to demonstrate every menu item. It is to make sure technology reduces workload instead of adding to it. You should know how to confirm what the autopilot is doing, how to hand-fly when appropriate, and how to recover when a route, frequency, or approach setup is entered incorrectly.

How Long Should a Flight Review Take?

The legal minimum is two hours total, but many thorough reviews take longer. A current pilot who knows the airplane and flies consistently may need only a modest amount beyond the minimum. A returning pilot may choose several flights, especially if the goal is to regain comfort rather than simply renew eligibility.

It depends on your recent experience, the complexity of the aircraft, the conditions on the day, and your intended flying. Someone preparing for weekend VFR local flights needs a different level of preparation than someone planning longer cross-country trips with passengers or working toward instrument proficiency.

Flight Review vs. Instrument Proficiency Check

A common point of confusion is the difference between a flight review and an instrument proficiency check, often called an IPC. A flight review addresses the broader safe exercise of pilot privileges. An IPC specifically addresses instrument proficiency for a pilot who is no longer instrument current and wants to operate under IFR.

A flight review can include instrument-related work, and an instrument-rated pilot may find that valuable. But unless the training meets the applicable requirements and the instructor provides the proper endorsement, it should not be assumed to restore instrument currency. Discuss your goals before training begins so the flight can be planned correctly.

How to Prepare for a Better Review

Bring your pilot certificate, photo identification, medical certificate or BasicMed documentation as applicable, logbook, and any prior training records that help the instructor understand your experience. Review the aircraft’s operating handbook, especially if you are flying something unfamiliar. Come ready to talk honestly about what feels comfortable and what does not.

That honesty saves time and produces better training. If crosswind landings, radio calls, stall recovery, weather decisions, or glass-cockpit workflows make you uneasy, say so early. A flight review works best when it is treated as focused coaching, not a performance for the instructor.
