
When Are Aircraft Inspections Required for Flight?

A smooth-running cross-country, an instrument lesson in the clouds, and a Saturday rental all start well before engine start. When are aircraft inspections required? The short answer is: before every flight, at recurring calendar or flight-hour intervals, and whenever a specific system or airworthiness directive calls for one.
For pilots, the goal is not to memorize maintenance regulations word for word. It is to know whether an aircraft is legal and safe for the mission you are about to fly. For owners and operators, inspection timing is the foundation of aircraft availability, maintenance planning, and resale value.
When Are Aircraft Inspections Required?
Aircraft inspections fall into two categories: checks a pilot makes before operating and inspections that require appropriately certificated maintenance personnel. The preflight is the pilot's immediate responsibility. Annual, 100-hour, and specialized regulatory inspections generally require an A&P mechanic, with an IA required for an annual inspection.
An aircraft can look clean, start easily, and still be out of inspection. A missing logbook entry, an expired transponder test, or an overdue airworthiness directive can make it unavailable for the planned operation. That is why a professional rental or training operation tracks more than tach time. Calendar dates, equipment status, operating limitations, and maintenance records all matter.
Before every flight: the pilot preflight
Under the FAA's operating rules, the pilot in command must determine that the aircraft is airworthy before flight. That starts with a thorough walk-around and cockpit inspection using the aircraft's approved checklist. On a modern Diamond DA40, that means more than checking fuel quantity and control surfaces. It also means reviewing the Garmin displays for faults, confirming required documents are aboard, checking oil and coolant as applicable, and looking carefully at the composite structure, propeller, tires, brakes, lights, and static ports.
A preflight inspection is not a substitute for maintenance, and it does not reset any inspection interval. It is the last opportunity to catch a new problem before it becomes an airborne one. A fuel stain beneath a wing, a flat-spotted tire, an unusual avionics message, or a new chip in a composite fairing deserves attention before departure.
For a flight away from home, pilots also need to become familiar with all available information concerning the flight. Weather, runway conditions, fuel requirements, NOTAMs, and performance are part of that decision. Inspection status is one more essential item in the go or no-go process.
The Annual Inspection: Every 12 Calendar Months
Most standard-category general aviation aircraft need an annual inspection every 12 calendar months. The wording matters: this is a calendar-month requirement, not 365 days. If an annual was signed off on March 8, it remains valid through March 31 of the following year. There is no grace period beyond the end of that month.
An annual is a detailed inspection conducted in accordance with the scope and detail of FAA regulations. An A&P mechanic with inspection authorization, commonly called an IA, must approve the aircraft for return to service after an annual. The work may uncover items that require repair before that approval can be made.
The annual inspection is sometimes treated as a date on a scheduling board. It is much more useful when viewed as a complete condition check. For aircraft that fly regularly in the Pacific Northwest, mechanics may pay particular attention to moisture exposure, corrosion-prone hardware, landing-gear wear, brake condition, and water intrusion around seals and access panels. Composite aircraft require their own trained eye. A surface that appears minor can warrant a closer assessment if it affects structure or moisture protection.
The 100-Hour Inspection: Common in Training and Rental Flying
A 100-hour inspection is required when an aircraft is used to carry people for hire or when flight instruction for hire is provided in an aircraft supplied by the instructor. That makes this interval particularly relevant to flight schools and active rental fleets.
The scope of a 100-hour inspection is the same as an annual inspection, but it does not require an IA. An appropriately certificated A&P mechanic can perform and approve it. Unlike an annual, a 100-hour inspection may be exceeded by up to 10 hours only to reach a place where the inspection can be completed. Those extra hours count against the next 100-hour interval.
A privately owned aircraft used solely for personal flying does not automatically need a 100-hour inspection. It still needs its annual, compliance with applicable maintenance requirements, and any inspections required by its equipment or approved maintenance program. The distinction matters for owners considering leaseback arrangements: once an airplane enters a training or rental environment, utilization and inspection planning change quickly.
Required Inspections for IFR and Transponder Operations
Some inspection requirements depend entirely on the type of operation you plan to conduct. An airplane may be legal for a daytime VFR flight yet not legal for an IFR trip through controlled airspace.
For IFR operations in controlled airspace, the aircraft's static pressure system, altimeter, and automatic altitude-reporting system must have been tested and inspected within the preceding 24 calendar months. This is commonly called the pitot-static or altimeter inspection, although the regulatory requirement covers several connected systems.
The transponder also requires a test and inspection within the preceding 24 calendar months when it is required for the airspace or operation. In practice, shops often coordinate transponder and pitot-static work because the schedules are similar. A failed altitude encoder or inaccurate transponder reply is not merely an avionics inconvenience. It can prevent a planned flight into airspace where the equipment is required.
IFR pilots have another recurring check to manage: the VOR accuracy check. If you plan to use VOR navigation for IFR operations, the VOR equipment must have been checked within the preceding 30 days and documented. This is a pilot operational check, not a shop inspection, but it is an easy requirement to overlook in an avionics suite built around GPS navigation.
ELT, Airworthiness Directives, and Manufacturer Limits
Emergency locator transmitters generally require inspection within 12 calendar months. The inspection includes proper installation, battery corrosion, operation of controls and sensor, and sufficient signal strength. ELT batteries also must be replaced or recharged when half their useful life has expired, after more than one cumulative hour of use, or after 50 percent of their useful life has been used, whichever comes first.
Airworthiness directives, or ADs, are another category that can impose inspection or replacement deadlines. An AD may require a one-time action, an inspection at a stated interval, repetitive inspections, or a modification. Compliance is mandatory. The applicable ADs vary by aircraft, engine, propeller, appliance, and installed equipment, so the logbooks and maintenance records are the source of truth.
Manufacturer maintenance manuals and airworthiness limitations also matter. A modern aircraft may have scheduled checks based on calendar time, flight hours, cycles, or component life limits. Some are recommendations that support reliability and value. Others are mandatory because they are part of an FAA-approved airworthiness limitations section or operating limitation. This is where an experienced maintenance team familiar with the specific airframe is valuable, especially for composite aircraft such as Diamond and Cirrus.
What Pilots Should Verify Before Accepting an Aircraft
A pilot renting or flying a club aircraft does not need to perform a logbook audit before every flight. A well-managed operator should track inspection status and remove aircraft from service when required work is due. Still, pilots should know what is current and ask when something does not add up.
Before a longer trip or an IFR flight, verify the aircraft's annual status, 100-hour status when applicable, ELT inspection, pitot-static inspection, transponder inspection, and VOR check if you will rely on VOR navigation. Also confirm that any required maintenance has been signed off and that there are no unresolved discrepancies affecting your flight.

Inspection Status Is a Flight-Planning Item
The practical rule is simple: do not treat aircraft inspections as paperwork that belongs only to mechanics. The pilot in command still has to make the airworthiness decision, and the best time to discover an expired inspection is not after loading bags for a weekend trip.
Build inspection awareness into your normal planning habits. Check the aircraft condition before every flight, understand which recurring inspections apply to your operation, and ask early when a date or logbook entry is unclear. That habit protects safety, preserves dispatch reliability, and leaves more of your attention for the part that matters most: flying well.
